The place, the activities

What’s the weather going to be like in Montana?

September is gorgeous in Montana, and getting cool. The days are mild, with highs typically in the 50’s or 60’s (Fahrenheit). The nights get brisk — in the 30’s and 40’s. October is not usually rainy—maybe four or five days spread through the month. Sprinkle all that with uncertainty salt.

If I’m not super outdoorsy can I still participate?

Yes. No camping or long hikes are involved. Most walks will be on level ground, and if more of a climb is an option, we’ll talk about it first. If you do crave long walks or runs, we can point you to options.

What kind of physical condition do I have to be in to do the activities?

As long as you can walk comfortably, you’ll be able to participate in all outdoor activities. That said, you’re always welcome to opt out of anything. We’ll give you alternatives as well.

What kind of food is served? Can you accommodate special dietary restrictions?

Yes. We love to create healthy and flavorful meals, and customize the menu based on a survey of each year’s dietary preferences and restrictions.

Logistics

Is transportation included?

Our package includes transportation to and from the airport and comfortable rides to all activities. How you get to Great Falls is up to you. Here are some tips on getting there.

Are accommodations included?

Yes, your room is included in the price, and it’s beautiful! Everyone stays at the Lark and Laurel in Fort Benton.

Where’s the nearest airport?

Great Falls International Airport (GTF) is the closest airport. Check out the Getting There page for more travel tips.

What should I bring?

Bring what you need for what you want to work on. We’ll provide the basics of a desk, power, printer, paper, sticky notes, …that sort of thing. If you require something special about a place to work or gear, let us know and we’ll try to accommodate within reason.

Otherwise, bring comfortable casual clothes, layers of clothing, and shoes that can take you out in the rough. Some places we will walk have spiky plants, in case that informs your choice of footwear.

Is there Wifi?

Yes. You can access high-speed wifi when in the Lark and Laurel, the Franklin Street House, in the local shops, and other places around town.

People

Who is Creators Week not a fit for?

This wouldn’t be a fit if you prefer a workshop-style course of instruction or focused personal coaching.

In the “reading” / feedback sessions, you’ll be more comfortable and get more out of them if you can step back from your work so we can all talk about it objectively. If that sounds excruciating, maybe let’s talk about it.

If you’re looking for long free-roaming explorations of Montana, we’ll get a good taste of that but it’s not really what this is about.

How do I know I’ll get along with everyone?

Participants are always amazed at how quickly their group moves from strangers to trusted companions. I pay careful attention to creating a “good gathering,” where the mix of people, place, activities, and hosting are all in service to support each person’s becoming. If you’d like to know more or have particular concerns, let’s talk about it.

I identify as a person of color or LGBTQIA+. Will the Frontier Retreat be a safe and inclusive experience for me

Yes, so far as it’s possible for us to control. We take great care to make the retreat a safe, inclusive and affirming place for all people regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. The experience works best for everyone when each person feels seen, valued and respected, and is able to bring their full Self into the experience. While we can’t promise complete safety, we can promise attention and partnership. And, this being a place for creative efforts, the distinction between “safe space” and “brave space” applies.

I’m an introvert and this seems like a lot of being with people.

You’re not alone. You’ll have a few hours each day to take time for yourself. You may also opt out of any planned activity (we’ll even suggest lovely alternatives).

Still have questions

I’d like to come but can’t make this date. Do I have other options?

Maybe? I hope to do it again, so there’s that. I have wondered about an online version, where we all work in our home places but hold a six-day rhythm of making, conversation, reflection and play. But as of now, none of these things are definite. Let me know what you’d like.

I’m still wondering if this is right for me. Can I talk to you more about it?

Absolutely. I’d love to hear what you’re looking for and help you determine if it’s right for you. Let’s schedule a chat.
